The Virgin on the Crescent with a Starry Crown

The Virgin on the Crescent with a Starry Crown

1508

Albrecht Dürer

German, Nuremberg 1471-1528

The brilliant aureole around the Virgin and the ornate crown she wears give this image a steely splendor. The lifelike, chubby baby may have been inspired by paintings Dürer saw in Italy, where he spent the years 1505 to 1507.
