Pomander

Pomander

early 18th century

Filled with perfumes and worn to mask unpleasant odors, this jade pomander would have also provided a measure of good fortune along with a sweet fragrance. The delicate openwork motif of the three friends, consisting of pine, plum and bamboo, promises long life. A so-called "endless knot," another symbol for longevity, is carved in low relief on the back of the pomander.
