Ainu coat

Datelate 19th - early 20th century
Label TextThis coat is similar to what present-day Ainu wear. The emphasis is on the motif-relief. That the stitching is clean on the inside of the robe is an indication of a talented sewer. This uses a "reverse" machi to gather the folds, whereas usuualyl "machi" is an extender. Kaparamip=pattern The Ainu used whatever was on hand. --Ainu Association of Hokkaidô delegation visit to SAAM, 12/17/09
