What a Mouth of Gold
Datelate 18th-early 19th century
Maker
Francisco José Goya y Lucientes
Spanish, 1746-1828
Label TextAgain Goya criticizes the Church. The parrot is the obvious symbol for a speaker who mimics old texts instead of offering enlightening interpretation. The "mouth of gold" sarcastically refers to this tired rhetoric and suggests also the Church's amassing of riches at the expense of the devout and fearful poor.
