Saucer

12th century

To facilitate mass production, bowls were stacked and fired upside down in saggars (firing boxes). The mouth rim was wiped clean of glaze and finished with a metal band. The lion and the pomegranate are auspicious motifs conveying good wishes for high-ranking officialdom and producing abundant offspring.
