Some Living American Women Artists/Last Supper

1972

Mary Beth Edelson

American, born 1933

Made in the heyday of the feminist movement, this rendition of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper has an all-female cast. With Georgia O'Keeffe at the center, in the place of Jesus Christ, she is flanked by other formidable women artists. The allusion to self-sacrifice is an ironic reminder of the difficulties women artists had faced for fighting for recognition.
