Village by Bamboo Grove

This lyrical scene portrays a lone figure waiting for a visitor in a rustic house by a bamboo grove. It is a rare example of Seihô's very early work that emulates Yosa Buson (1716-1783), a literati artist much admired by painters of the Maruyama and Shijô schools. The depiction of the thatched cottage with a woven bamboo fence and the use of color wash combined with rhythmic brushwork recall Buson's style.
