Yanagihara Mutsuo

Japanese, born 1934

Made in Yanagihara's first year of teaching at the University of Washington, this vase, with its coiled geometric form, suggests the new direction the artist would take in subsequent years. The dark blue top is achieved with cobalt and ash glaze, made from fallen maple leaves and fireplace ash gathered by Yanagihara himself.
