Waterfall Deep in the Mountains

Waterfall Deep in the Mountains

1908-9

Tsuji Kako

Japanese, 1870 - 1931

A magnificent view of rocky mountain peaks in mist, with massive volumes and folds of the rocks depicted by accumulated brushstrokes in subtle tones. A waterfall suggests moisture and freshness while connecting foreground trees and the towering peaks, establishing a sense of the mountain's scale. Green Bamboo, (the screens adjacent to this painting), reflects Kako's supreme skill in creating a rich variety ranging from representational to abstract, with different brush techniques and mediums. Griffith and Patricia Way were among the first to fully appreciate Kak?'s innovative artistic achievement and begin collecting his work.
