Self-Portrait on Geary Street

Self-Portrait on Geary Street

1958

Imogen Cunningham

American, 1883-1976

Throughout Cunningham's seventy-year career she repeatedly turned her lens on herself, producing a number of self-portraits that show the photographer amidst the scene she framed for her camera, as in this photograph. Self-portraits had always interested her. In 1905, as a young woman in her early twenties, Cunningham purchased her first camera, which inspired her to take one of her first self-portraits (reproduced below), a photograph she composed on the University of Washington campus.
