In the Great Hall

1990

Jeffry Mitchell

American, born 1958

Asked about sources of influence for this hall, Jeffry Mitchell remembers "the fictitious French paper architect Boullee, an Ensor etching of a cathedral interior with a suspended basket of burning corpses, and the famous painting of Charles Wilson Peale pulling a curtain back to reveal a natural history museum." This watercolor was part of his planning for an installation in 1990 that emulated "the great hall in my mind. I always love architectural drawings and plans and the posture of architecture- arrogant-genius-macho-utopian-gloriously flawed."
