18th century

Modeled on boats found on the lake and rivers of the Jiangnan region, particularly Suzhou in southern China, the idyllic imagery contained in the carving's details-such as the lone fisherman, fish basket, napping cat, and the thriving plant-all speak to the literati tradition of floating away from the vagaries of the world.
