Ox and Herder Boy

Ox and Herder Boy

1736-1795

Desire for the simplicity of a bucolic lifestyle is exemplified by a young boy leading his ox, fishing and gathering firewood. This rustic image is in contrast with the traditional path of the elite scholar-officials who must from a young age focus their energy on studying, passing the official examinations, and then maneuvering the hazardous waters of government service.
