Kusakabe Kimbei

Japanese, 1841 - 1934

One of Japan’s pioneering photographers, Kusakabe Kimbei photographed people and places in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This photo captures a procession of Kyoto’s annual Gion Matsuri festival, also featured in the folding screens in this gallery. The parade of yamaboko floats is not only the major spectacle of the month-long festival but also its climax.
