Buddha's hand citron

Date1736-95
Label TextThe Buddha's hand citron is a pleasant-smelling but inedible fruit that is a most unusual artistic motif. It takes its name from the resemblance of its form to a classic Buddhist hand gesture, but it was popularized because its name in Chinese, foshou, sounds like the words for blessings (fu) and longevity (shou).
