Howard Kottler

American, 1930-1989

Kottler, who joined the University of Washington faculty in 1965, was known for his exuberant, often irreverent, multimedia works that combined ceramics, painting and decals in wildly inventive fashion. An early mentor to Japanese ceramicist Yanagihara Mutsuo, Kottler experimented with bright colors and metallic lusters, as well as bold geometric shapes and Art Deco-inspired forms.
