Label TextCornell came to know the Surrealists through exhibitions in New York in the early 1930s. By 1936 he was building boxes such as these composed of a variety of found materials, a pursuit that sustained him into the 1960s. There is a visual poetry to the best of Cornell's work that often includes disorienting shifts of scale, voyages to the stars, or nocturnal reveries.
