Woman's kimono with long sleeves

Woman's kimono with long sleeves

20th century

Kimono with long, hanging sleeves (furisode) are worn by unmarried women—married women have to do house work and long sleeves are impractical. This silk kimono is adorned with colorful pines, maples, folding fans, cartwheels, waves, bamboo leaves, and tasseled cords. The black color and the fine designs indicate this kimono would have been worn at a wedding.
