Joseph Cornell

American, 1903-1972

Joseph Cornell was an avatar of the collage aesthetic in American art, making not only his famous shadow boxes (some of which are on view in an adjacent gallery), but also a large body of two-dimensional collages. These works are compelling for their early use of a "jump-cut" montage technique which makes unlikely combinations of found materials, presaging much of the work that has since followed in contemporary art.
