Joseph Cornell

American, 1903-1972

Cornell was a reclusive artist who used a surrealist approach, making box constructions and collages. His work often used humble found objects, like scraps of wood and coins, as well as images of Hollywood personalities. This collage features a magazine picture of the actress Christine Kaufmann. (Kaufmann appeared in movies including Constantine and the Cross and Escape from East Berlin, and was married to actor Tony Curtis from 1963-1967.)

Here, Cornell plays with the dividing line between illusion and reality, adding a collaged coin to act as the pendant of Kaufmann's necklace.
