Mimbres Classic black-on-white bowl

Mimbres Classic black-on-white bowl

ca. 1000-1130

Like the shallow black-on-white bowls, deep bowls with red designs were used in life, then buried with the dead. Red coloration is produced when the iron ore in the paint oxidizes during firing. A stratified composition of geometric zones is bounded by lines—conveying a meticulously ordered artistic universe.
