Snuff bottle with baman jinbao (Eight Barbarians Bearing Tribute)

1736-1795

Europeans brought snuff—ground tobacco mixed with aromatics—to China. Here, the Europeans appear as exotic motifs, substituting for the foreigners from faraway lands who were usually depicted offering tributes to the Chinese emperor in the popular theme of baman jinbao (Eight Barbarians Bearing Tribute).
