Mimbres Classic black-on-white bowl

Mimbres Classic black-on-white bowl

ca. 1000-1130

In funerary contexts where Mimbres bowls are found, many are punctured (called a "kill" or "breath" hole) before being placed over the face of the deceased. The flying bird depicted is infused with a life force, a reminder of the continual cycles of life and death.
