Date1906
Maker Rookwood Pottery Co. Cincinnati, Ohio
Decorator Sallie Coyne American, 1876-1939
Label TextMany of Rookwood's early works were inspired by ceramics and other art objects sent by Japan to represent the country at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876. The damselfly decoration, pale blue matte glaze, and shape of this vase all reflect Japanese influence. Sallie Coyne, who painted the vase, worked for Rookwood at a time when women were hired to decorate ceramics, but it was deemed inappropriate for them to handle the clay or straddle a potter's wheel.
