Bridle (from the Jammers series)

1975-76

Robert Rauschenberg

American, 1925 - 2008

In the early 1970s, Rauschenberg moved his permanent studio from New York City to Captiva, Florida. The Jammers series, named after the largest merchant sailing ships of the 19th century, was the artist's allusion to his new surroundings on the sea. Likewise, "bridle" is a nautical term for a line or wire fastened between two points to distribute the strain. The series was inspired by the textiles which he purchased in Ahmadabad, India, where he traveled in 1975.
