Richard Tuttle's work of this period took painting to a place where stretcher bars, paint brushes, and a fixed orientation were rendered obsolete. Instead, works such as this were stained with color and could be pinned to the wall at any height and in any configuration. Such a casual and non-precious attitude toward painting was consistent with his increasingly ephemeral approaches to artmaking.
