Maker Lee Friedlander American, born 1934
Label TextFriedlander, who was born in Aberdeen, Washington, began his career making photographic portraits of jazz musicians for album covers. Affiliated with such photographers as Garry Winogrand, Robert Frank, Walker Evans, and Diane Arbus, Friedlander began in the early 1960s to make work that he referred to as documents of the American "social landscape." Friedlander included this work in a book of his photographs published in 1970, Self Portrait. The artist's shadow appears in each work in this series.
