Label TextThe golden flakes that resemble the speckles of a Japanese pear are called nashiji-ko. Nashiji lacquer flourished in the Muromachi period (1336-1573), when an object's entire ground was flecked with the copper-orange flakes. By the Edo period, the designs were more varied, with irregular bands of nashiji-ko applied in abstract patterns.
