Are You Rea
1964-68
Based in Los Angeles, Heinecken was trained in printmaking and graphic design and established the photography department at UCLA in 1964. His experimental practice focused on what might be described as an archeological mining of magazine imagery.
He was particularly drawn to the depictions of femininity and masculinity in the popular press. For the portfolio Are You Rea, Heinecken contact printed double-sided magazine pages on gelatin silver paper, which were then turned into offset photo-lithographs. Each page from this portfolio shows a composite image, combining the front and back. The artist eliminated some extraneous text, resulting in strange yet evocative hybrid images.
Portfolio containing twenty-five lithograph reproductions of photograms, all untitled, vintage portfolio
