Octagonal plate

Octagonal plate

ca. 1800

A design of peony and rocks, both representing long life, ornaments this underglaze blue porcelain, known in Japanese as sometsuke ware. A color-resist technique was used, in which the white design appears in negative against a deep cobalt ground. Stencils and stamps were often used in applying the decoration in the mid-Edo period.
