Bukan and His Tiger

Japanese, 1636 - 1713

Fenggan (Japanese: Bukan) was a legendary Chan monk who lived in China during the Tang dynasty (618–907). Known for his eccentric behaviors, he was accompanied by a tiger. In Chinese and later Japanese ink painting, Fenggan or Bukan and his tiger became a well-depicted subject.
