Linear precision is a core element of Weldon Butler's many careers. While in Chicago in the 1960s he worked as a craftsman fabricating relief maps, and then became a race-car engine and body specialist. After moving to the Pacific Northwest, Butler was hired as a model builder for Boeing. Such jobs in engineering and cartography kept him immersed in geometric abstraction. Inspired by the conceptualist movement of artists in the 1960s, he began producing prints, sculptures and photographs. These drawings exemplify his dedication to revealing the underlying geometries that envelop urban structures.
