Carpet

Date18th century
Label TextThis unusually large carpet features geometric floral motifs, typical of village designs in Turkey. Filling the central portion are repeating medallions, an ancient design with ties to the Roman and Byzantine mosaics in that same region. The medallions even have echoes in more contemporaneous designs, such as the first page from a Persian book, on view in this gallery. For centuries the town of Demirci in western Turkey has been famed for its weaving. Older carpets such as this one are especially noted for their vibrant yellow and red hues.
