Vase with flaring rim

1967

Yanagihara Mutsuo

Japanese, born 1934

This piece typifies the work Yanagihara produced when he first came to the University of Washington as a ceramics instructor in 1966. Its simple shape and sinuous, organic form recall the traditional clay vessels of early Japan, presenting a beautiful contrast to the more innovative work for which Yanagihara has earned his reputation.
