Barlach was a dedicated sculptor within the German Expressionist movement, known for making powerful works that portrayed a sense of human suffering and anguish. A deep humanism and sense of tragedy coursed through his work, and that can be seen in this sculpture, which although stylized, still elicits one's sympathies for this impoverished woman.
