Mark Tobey

born Centerville, Wisconsin, 1890; died Basel, Switzerland, 1976

During a trip to Venice and Murano in 1966, Tobey collaborated with Italian glassworkers and made this head. Its distorted form and firey colors convey extreme emotions. Tobey once described himself as "a nervous man," and this work may have some unknown autobiograpical origin.
