Candlestick
1786
The angular linear form and fan-like ornamentation of these candlesticks were inspired by architectural remnants and frescoed motifs found in Rome and unearthed from the ashes of two ancient Roman cities, Herculaneum and Pompeii.
Archaeology-the scientific study of past human life and civilizations through material remains originated in Italy during the first half of the eighteenth century, when planned excavations under the aegis of Charles, King of Naples, were undertaken at these two sites. As European nobility from England to Russia vied for excavated treasures, a renewed interest in the art of ancient Greece and Rome percolated through society.
