Weft ikat sarong

Weft ikat sarong

18th century

A highly decorative floral and abstract design covers much of this sarong. It was perfectly planned by using the ikat technique—wrapping the warp or weft yarns before the dying process to create a desired pattern. Weft ikat is found across Southeast Asia in many Malay cultures.
