Wosko (wasgo; sea wolf)
Date1977
Label TextFrancis Williams was influential is re-establishing Haida formline art, which he expertly conveyed in jewelry and prints. Like other artists of his generation, he studied Haida art collections in museums and sought out older Haida artists, including metalsmith Art Adams. The precise lines and sharp angles of his design here are derived from Williams’s stylish metalwork motifs. Part wolf, part whale, the powerful wasgo is featured in stories about a young fisherman who kills the wasgo and wears its skin to catch seafood for his community.
