White Peach Blossoms

Sakakibara Shiho

Japanese 1887 - 1971

The gnarled, almost otherworldly peach tree rising from the center of the two-paneled screen is oddly juxtaposed with a pair of white chickens sitting placidly beneath the jutting branches. Shiho, who was one of the founders of the Kokuga Society, a nihonga painting collective, sought to foster reform of traditional painting by emphasizing self-expression and imagination, two traits clearly at play in this provocative painting.
