Kimura Risaburo

Japanese, 1924 - 2014

Kimura Risaburo moved to New York City from Japan in the 1960’s and quickly became an internationally recognized print artist. Kimura treats the cityscape, the primary focus in his powerful works, as a rhythmic collection of essentially abstract, simplified patterns. By overlapping and juxtaposing these forms, the artist reflects the visual chaos of an overcrowded and bustling city. In some works, as seen here, the toppled buildings and ominous clouds portend a dark future for the modern city. In other works, the focus is on
