Label TextProfessionally trained as a western-style painter, Sawada Tetsuro began producing lithographs and silkscreen prints in 1973. Sawada, often called the “skyscape artist,” was inspired by the vast expanse of aerial space and the mood of the jet age. Here, the artist used twenty-four screens inked in a multitude of blue and pale warm colors to create a night-sky scene. Cloud layers deceptively appear like mountains on the horizon amidst the vast blue sky. Mastering the difficult technique of shading in silkscreen, the artist was able to create exquisite depths in color while juxtaposing matte and shiny colors for contrast.
