Toko Shinoda

Japanese, born 1913

Shinoda Toko is one of Japan's most distinctive and well-known artists. Painter, calligrapher and lithographer, she combines the power of the brushstroke with the subtlety of varying shades of sumi ink. Her prints are not copies of her paintings, but are original creations brushed directly onto the litho stone with fluid natural movements, skillfully transmitted to the absorbent paper. The calligraphic brushstrokes create abstract works of potency and grace. Although the three examples in this gallery were not intended as a unified group, the visual impact of each is enhanced by its relativity to the adjacent works.
