Yayanagi Tsuyoshi

Japanese, born 1933

After studying lithography under surrealist artist Lucien Coutaud at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, Yayanagi Tsuyoshi made his first screen print in 1968. His abstracted images of animal and human figures are boldly colorful, and often feature black and white stripes. By using slanting lines to create spatial depth, he draws the viewer in to focus on the bull, framed between concentric circles. The imaginative composition is somewhat jarring, but the combination of patterns and colors is mesmerizing.
