Fujita Tsuguji

Japanese, 1886 - 1968

Fujita Tsuguji was a Western-style Japanese painter who spent a large amount of time in Paris and eventually took French citizenship in 1955. He was well known both in Japan and abroad, where he adopted the name Leonard Foujita when he was baptized as a Catholic. His work is characterized by fine contour lines and delicate washes of color, and his signature style is called “great milk-white.” The two images on view here reflect a period after World War II when he was particularly interested in the subject of children.
