Serizawa Keisuke

Japanese, 1895 - 1984

Another artist associated directly with the Mingei movement and its core circle of artists, Serizawa Keisuke often worked with paper stencils but also produced book art and textile designs. He adopted methods used for textiles, including the katazome method (stencil that uses a resist-dye), particularly popular in Okinawa. Serizawa uses the stencil approach here on paper to create the 1974 calendar. Each month has a different design and color palette. This highlights another example of Mingei that extends beyond ceramics or wearable textiles.
