Twelve Bridges at Itako (Itako junibashi)

Label TextItako, located near Tokyo, was an important center of water and land transportation during the Edo period (1603-1868). In this sun-filled scene, Kôichiro lovingly portrays the present-day activities of local residents by the picturesque waterway. Despite his initial training as an oil painter, Kôichiro chose to work with traditional sumi ink, without color, for most of his long career. This painting shows his focus on the effect and quality of light, which began to dominate his work during the 1940s.
