Spring
ca. 1920
Banka fills almost the entire painting with lush hillside landscape dotted with rustic architecture and softened with gentle pink veils of cherry blossoms. His loose brushwork and exuberant composition convey the lively mood of the season. Among the figures strolling along the meandering path to view the flowering trees are several men wearing Western-style clothes. Through his carefree painterly approach and inclusion of contemporary fashion, Banka achieves a delightfully original version of a familiar theme.
