William Wegman

American, born 1943

Since 1972, William Wegman has been using the images of his dogs-Man Ray, Fay Ray, Battina, Crooky, Chundo, and Chip, in addition to a litter of puppies-in his photography and video work. Wegman is best known for his work in which he humanizes his dogs, dressing them up in outlandish costumes or posing them in scenes from fairy tales. In his more recent photographs, Wegman has done away with the costumes he used previously and has focused instead on the form of the dogs' bodies. In Curly, for example, Wegman shows the dog from behind, focusing on the ears that curl like Victorian ringlets.
