In March 1965, Dan Budnick followed the circuit of Martin Luther King Jr. for a week as he led the Civil Rights movement through Alabama. Dr. King was in the prime of his heroic status, having recently won the Nobel Peace Prize and Time Magazine's "Man of the Year" award.

At the same time he lived amidst a virtual minefield of assassination threats and levels of violence that came close to civil war. This photograph captures a powerful moment when Dr. King is surrounded by support for his belief in the "inescapable network of mutuality" that binds all people in "single garment of destiny."
